7. ‘SURYA MUDRA’
It increases the fire element in the body, hence this is also known as ‘Agni Mudra’ or ‘Agni Vardhak Mudra’. In this ‘Mudra’ the excess of earth element is ended or controlled.
This ‘Mudra’ helps to maintain temperature & improve vision. Very effective in shivering and cold. Thyroid disease is cured by pressurizing the central point of the thyroid gland in the palm while doing this ‘Mudra’.
BENEFITS :-
a) Practicing ‘Surya Mudra’ for 20 minutes in a day, accelerates metabolism in your body that in turn helps to reduces cholesterol in body.
b) If you are fighting with obesity than this ‘Mudra’ is boon for you as it helps in reducing weight and obesity.
c) Reduces anxiety
d) Improves vision
e) It corrects indigestion problem
f) Helps in thyroid function.
g) It controls the amount of urea in the blood.
h) This Mudra provides the heat of sun in short it provides energy and keeps us fit.
i) Very helpful to remove swelling of the body.
How to do it ? (see fig 1.7)
Sit in any comfortable position like Padmasana, Sidhaasana, Swastikasana, Vajrasana or Sahaj Padmasan. Put your hands on the thigh comfortably , palm facing upward
Close your eyes and take deep breath, slowly exhale till you get slow rhythmic breathing, do not decrease or increase breathing speed be calm and comfortable while you breath.
Press third finger under the thumb keeping all other fingers straight. In start you will feel pain but it will diminish as you practice.
In other words ‘PRITHVI’ comes under ‘AGNI’.

Duration :-
You can do this for 8 to 20 min in three times a day or 30 min at a stretch . Best results is when you perform before 11 am in morning.
Side effects :-
‘Surya Mudra’ should not be performed if there is weakness in body. It should be done only 3 times a day. Do not do it for long time in summer season
Drink little water before performing this ‘Mudra’.
Precautions :-
Just keep in mind no pressure to be applied on the fingers. As only restless and unstable mind applies pressure. Just touch the tip no pressure to be applied. This can be performed sitting standing or lying pose. Plus ‘Surya Mudra’ can be performed while walking as well . This Mudra can be performed in full stomach.
This Mudra can be performed immediately after meal.
